"Domi" Aegerter a superb 2nd, Mulhauser crashes in the worst moment

30.05.2015

The Swiss have certainly experienced the craziest qualifying session ever on the superb circuit of Mugello that hosts the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, round six of the 2015 World Championship. Dominique Aegerter (Technomag Racing Interwetten) and Thomas Lüthi (Derendinger Racing Interwetten) found each other on the track on two different occasions and helped each other out to a double achievement: second quickest and first front row start of the season for Aegerter and fourth quickest - 0.005 seconds from third! - for Lüthi, currently second in the provisional Moto2 World Championship standings behind Johann Zarco from France. The third member of the "Dream Team", Robin Mulhauser (Technomag Racing Interwetten) also had a great start to the session before his crash that did not have any major consequences for him. He eventually finished twenty-fifth as he was able to go back out for a few final minutes of this hot qualifying. The boss of the two Swiss teams, Frédéric Corminboeuf, was smiling: "We have always believed in Dominique and despite a difficult start to the season, he proved us right today. Our two riders found each other on the track by chance and naturally helped each other. It wasn't a planned strategy. Dominique made an important step forward and now we have to consolidate this achievement with him. Tom was the usual himself: strong, fast on the entries and he is certainly a candidate for the victory tomorrow. The battle will be great. Robin did not have much luck again with a crash that ended his good start to the qualifying session prematurely. Even though he was able to go out again in the final minutes, he was not able to improve his lap time. With him the objective remains the same: to get into a Top-20 in qualifying."

They said ...

Dominique Aegerter (Technomag Racing Interwetten, 2nd): "Thanks to the team who did an amazing job. We made a huge step forward today from the technical point of view, which allowed me to ride really fast. Also my teammate Tom Lüthi helped me nicely before I returned the favour. I am still not sure if I can keep up with the pace of the fastest on the entire race distance but this performance boosted my confidence, it proves that I can be fast on this bike. For the first time this season the bike is doing what I am asking for and I was even surprised by the time I did - 7 tenths quicker than my fastest lap time from last year. My objective remains the same: to confirm a Top10."

Robin Mulhauser (Technomag Racing Interwetten, 25th ): "In the third free practice this morning we did a good job and from the first lap in qualifying I was able to improve my best lap time by 4 tenths. On the third lap I was one second quicker but then I went a bit too hard into the third corner so in the next one I had to brake a bit earlier and I lost the front. I crashed heavily, I was stuck under my bike for a moment and my right calf received a shock but nothing serious. My mechanics did everything they could to send me back out on track for the final 10 minutes of the session but I did not have any feeling anymore. It is really annoying because I still have a feeling that I wasn't far from a good achievement."
