Aegerter and Mulhauser both lose the lottery in Assen

28.06.2014

A violent downpour hit the circuit of Assen during the starting procedure for the Moto2 race. The start was delayed by 25 minutes when the rain turned into hail... and dark clouds were all around the legendary circuit. What to do? Race with rain tyres or play a lottery with slick tyres knowing that the Dutch track usually dries very quickly? This was the decision of both Technomag-carXpert Team riders - Dominique Aegerter (2nd on the grid, rain front tyre, slick rear tyre) and Robin Mulhauser (both slick). Unfortunately this was not a lucky bet even though Aegerter marked the fasters lap time of this strange race on his final lap.

Dominique Aegerter (21st): "I made this decision myself and we changed the rear tyre on the grid. I thought it would dry quicker and I nearly decided to go for both slick tyres if my chief mechanic Gilles Bigot did not warn me. People were judgmental after the race but I would make the same decision again. My goal was to win the race and being aware of lack of experience with my bike in the rain, I imagined this could happen. Had it been the last race of the season and us fighting for an important position in the championship, I wouldn't have taken so much risk, in any case, I take responsibility for the decision."

Robin Mulhauser (27th): "We decided to play the game with two slick tyres and it was a mistake. I immediately realised this and made a pit stop to change the tyres. I got my first experience in the rain today. I was in a group with some well-known riders, who made the same choice like me and I learned a lot. I would like to thank to the whole team who worked really hard last night to rebuild by bike."
