Tom Lüthi: a second place that goes down in history!

11.09.2017

This day, September 10th 2017, will go down in history as a milestone for the Swiss motorcyclists. Dominique Aegerter and Thomas Lüthi (carXpert Interwetten) marked a double historical moment on the soaked circuit of Misano in the rainy GP of San Marino & de la Riviera de Rimini Moto2. The two former teammates lasted until the last metres of the track, yet they didn’t hesitate to congratulate one another right after finishing the race. They weren’t alone for a long time, though.  Jesko Raffin (Garage Plus Interwetten) joined them as the number 10 of the race. This is a brilliant result, concerning there were numerous crashes registered on the track. Lüthi’s second place gives him 20 points, marks his tenth podium of the season in thirteen courses and only leaves him nine points behind current world championship leader Franco Morbidelli. The latter fell right at the start in the race and was therefore nothing to worry about for Lüthi. Five more tracks to go with an overall of 125 points to get before the world championship title of 2017. Third racer of CGBM Evolution, Spaniard Iker Lecuona (Garage Plus Interwetten) also wanted to participate in the celebrations of the day. He showed a strong performance, holding the 8th place, before his engine started to have problems and he finally had to stop the race.

Frédéric Corminboeuf on this very humid yet still beautiful day : «Tom did everything well. Domi wasn’t our enemy today, congratulations on his victory. Tom has tried to get on the first position a couple of times. He might have felt a little faster than his friend but he also knew that it wasn’t worth taking the risk. We’re happy and pleased. I’ve always said that we’re in the game for the title. We find ourselves in a very interesting position right now. Jesko Raffin knew that the key to his success lay in staying on his bike. He did a marvelous job and I hope this tenth place serves him as a wake-up call. Unfortunately, Iker couldn’t finish the race, but he anyway had a really good and successful weekend. Congrats to the whole team!”

Thomas Lüthi (carXpert Interwetten, 2nd):
“The day started with a lot of rain so we hoped to benefit from the warm-up to test our gear that was tuned to the wet conditions. Unfortunately, I fell quite fast and lost a great deal of time. I had some difficulties to find my rhythm in the beginning of the race. The moment I realized Morbidelli detached himself, I thought it was going to be hard to come back. But when I saw that he actually fell, that’s when everything changed. The only thing in my head was the championship. Domi handles the brakes really well. I couldn’t overtake him and I didn’t want to risk a fall, so I stayed put. This second place is extremely important for the world title. I’d like to congratulate Domi for his deserved victory. He did a great job here in Misano. We achieved a doubly victory that Switzerland has never seen before.”
