Aegerter (10th) moves up in the overall classification, Mulhauser disappointed after a great start

22.05.2016

What a day on the circuit of Mugello: the Moto2 race was interrupted by a red flag on the fourth lap following a crash of Xavi Vierge from Spain (his bike damaged one of the inflatable protective barriers). Starting from the third row of the grid, Thomas Lüthi (Garage Plus Interwetten) was in the lead when the race was stopped after yet another incredible start. A new starting procedure had to follow, after a long debate, for a 10-lap race; several riders - including the world championship leader Alex Rins - were penalised for arriving late on the grid and had to start from the back. This wasn't the case for neither Tom Lüthi - who had another perfect start - nor Dominique Aegerter and Robin Mulhauser (carXpert Interwetten), who were in sixth and ninth position respectively when they completed the first lap of the restarted race! Fourth at the end, Lüthi gets to keep his provisional third position overall, while Aegerter (10th in the Grand Prix of Italy) moves up to 5th overall. The boss Frédéric Corminboeuf sums up this hot day: "Tom was there the whole weekend, although there's this slight feeling of an unfinished business because we expected a podium. This was another solid performance, he remains close to the championship leader and he has resolved his problem he used to have in the previous years at the start of the race and during the first laps. Dominique moved up in the championship classification by one position, which is good and he also improved throughout each session. We still have to work to find him a better feeling on the bike. Robin had an incredible start, he was even in 9th position and able to maintain the pace for a couple of laps before he lost contact when his tyres lost grip. It is a pity because he could have done really well today."

They said...

Dominique Aegerter (carXpert Interwetten, 10th) "I gained a position in the championship which is something positive about today. That aside, I started to have a good feeling especially in the second race with the harder tyre, although the feeling with the bike is far from perfect. It was hot being in that group, unfortunately I lost contact with the leaders after a clash with Axel Pons. Then Rins, Morbidelli and Nakagami closed up. The result is not the greatest but I was enjoying being on the bike at times again. Big thanks to the team, we have tried many things and we will continue to do so on Monday during a one-day test."

Robin Mulhauser (carXpert Interwetten, 21st) "If only I was the "last lap man" rather than the first lap! I had a good start already in the first race but unfortunately the group with Dominique quickly pulled a gap. I used a harder tyre for the second race and I was ninth after the first lap, I did my personal best lap time in the race, only 0.9 off the absolutely best lap time today (Tom Lüthi). When I lost grip, however, I made several mistakes. One rider passed me, then another and my last three laps were a disaster. Now we are going to try to understand what happened."
